Getting started

Install to live offer in about ten minutes. Step two is the one people miss, so it is worth reading even if you skim the rest.

1

Install Clinch

Install from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. Clinch asks for three things and uses each for one purpose.

Permissions requested
Orders, to attribute a recovery to a real order
Discounts, to create the single-use codes
Inventory, read only, for the margin guard

No name, email, phone or address is ever requested. See data and privacy.

2

Enable the app embedMost missed

Clinch ships as a theme app extension, and installing the app does not switch it on by itself. In your Shopify admin go to Online Store, then Themes, then Customize. Open the App embeds panel in the left sidebar, find Clinch Exit Intent Popup, toggle it on, and save.

The toggle has to end up green like the first row. Save the theme afterwards, or the change does not take.

Skip this and everything in the Clinch admin will look correct while nothing ever appears on your storefront. It is the single most common reason a merchant thinks Clinch is not working.

3

Set the discount

Onboarding walks you through the offer itself: how much to take off, or free shipping instead, and how long a claimed code stays alive. You can write your own headline here if you want the wording in your store's voice.

Discount
10% off
Code expires after
60minutes

The defaults. The expiry drives a real countdown in the popup, so what the shopper sees matches the code's actual end time.

4

Set your protections, before you go live

These sit in the same onboarding step deliberately, so you configure them before the first offer goes out rather than after. Both are optional.

Margin guard
On
15% minimum margin
Where it runs
Every product
Only the products and collections I list
Every product except the ones I list

The margin guard needs Cost per item filled in on your products. Even with both switched off, Clinch scopes each code to the product the shopper viewed and never fires on an item already on sale.

5

Turn it on

Choose a plan and activate the campaign. Your first 30 days from this moment carry no revenue share on any plan, so the month you spend finding out whether it works costs nothing beyond the plan price.

6

Confirm it fires

Open any product page on your storefront and add ?clinch_test=1 to the end of the URL.

yourstore.com/products/alpine-vision?clinch_test=1

The offer appears immediately, skipping the exit-intent wait and the once-per-session limit. Test mode issues a fake code and writes nothing to your analytics or to Shopify, so run it as often as you like.

To see the real thing, load the page without the parameter, wait a few seconds, then move your cursor up and out through the top of the browser. On a phone, scroll down and then flick quickly upward.

7

What to look at afterwards

Three things, on three different timescales.

The funnel on Home, with your own numbers rather than benchmarks.

  • In the first days, the funnel. If shoppers see the offer but never claim it, the discount is probably too small for your price point.
  • In the first weeks, the per-signal report in Analytics. It shows how often each trigger is dismissed within two seconds, the closest thing to a false positive, and tells you which to switch off.
  • Once traffic accumulates, the measured lift. Until the smaller proof-mode group reaches roughly 200 sessions, Clinch prints no number rather than a misleading one.

Common questions

Why is nothing showing on my storefront?

Almost always the app embed. Installing Clinch does not switch it on by itself: you have to enable the Clinch app embed in Online Store, Themes, Customize. After that, add ?clinch_test=1 to any product URL to force the offer and confirm it renders.

Do I have to turn the margin guard on before going live?

No, but it is worth doing if your margins are tight. The guard ships off, and a fresh install already scopes each code to the product the shopper viewed, so a discount can never spill onto the rest of the cart. The guard adds a floor on top of that.

How long before I see anything in the dashboard?

Impressions and claims appear immediately. Recovered orders appear as soon as someone buys with a code. The measured lift takes longer: Clinch prints no number until the smaller of the two proof-mode groups has roughly 200 sessions.

Will testing it myself cost me anything?

No. Test mode uses a fake code and writes nothing to your analytics or to Shopify. A real test order on a development store does not charge either, since development stores never process real app billing.

Try it on your own store

Clinch is free to install. The Free plan costs $0 per month and takes 10% of revenue it actually recovers, so if it recovers nothing you pay nothing.
