Margin guard

Set your margin floor and Clinch won't cross it: it trims the discount, or skips the offer entirely, rather than sell a unit for less than it cost you.

What it reads

Shopify lets you record a Cost per item on every product variant, separate from its price. Once you turn the margin guard on, Clinch reads that field for whichever product a shopper is viewing and uses it to decide what discount, if any, is safe to offer.

What it does

You set a minimum margin percent, 15% by default, and optionally a hard cap on the discount in dollars. Clinch then works out the largest percent it could take off that product's price and still clear your floor. If your configured discount fits under that ceiling, it goes out unchanged. If it does not, Clinch trims it down to the largest percent that still fits. If even the smallest worthwhile discount would cross the floor, Clinch skips the offer on that product rather than show a number too small to matter.

This all happens per product, at the moment the offer is about to be shown, using that product's own cost and price. A high-margin item and a razor-thin one on the same store are evaluated separately.

Turning it on

In Settings, under margin guard: flip it on, set your minimum margin percent, and optionally a maximum discount in dollars as a second ceiling. Both are instant-save. There is nothing else to configure; Clinch applies the same floor to every eligible product automatically from then on.

Common questions

Does Clinch know my product costs automatically?

It reads whatever you have entered in Shopify's own Cost per item field on each variant. Turning the guard on requires a one-time re-approval of a read-only inventory permission, since that is where Shopify stores the field.

What if I haven't filled in Cost per item for a product?

With the guard on, Clinch skips the offer on that product rather than guess at a cost. Filling in the field, once, is what unlocks the offer there.

Is margin guard on by default?

No. It is off until you turn it on in Settings, because it depends on your Cost per item data being accurate. Every install still scopes each code to the exact product viewed, which is a separate protection that is on regardless.

Does it work together with product targeting?

Yes, independently. Targeting decides which products Clinch can run on at all. The margin guard then decides, for whichever product passed targeting, whether the configured discount is safe to give in full, safe at a smaller percent, or not safe at all.
